Kam, UWA graduate and artist (and Seek Wisdom voiceover talent), tells the story of his heritage through art.
Kamsani Bin Salleh, UWA Communications and Media graduate and artist also known by the moniker Kambarni, creates art that is a reflection of himself, and his heritage – telling stories of his descendance and highlighting the richness of Aboriginal culture.
Kam is descended from the Nimunburr and Yawuru peoples of the Kimberley and the Ballardong Noongar people of the Perth region in Western Australia.
I’m obviously very proud of my Indigenous heritage. Indigenous culture is still here, and it does evolve. [I’m] creating a hybrid of art today and art of the past. Kamsani Bin Salleh
Kam also uses his artwork as a platform to share knowledge and educate others about Aboriginal culture, reflecting the importance of cultural preservation and expression, while also challenging the notion of culture being trapped in the time.
Kam is a prolific artist, designer, and illustrator. You’ll find several of his painted murals, as well as projection works, around Perth city and surrounds in Yagan Square, Subiaco, East Perth, Melville and more, along with private commissions everywhere from breweries to local schools.
Kam has also been commissioned by the Department of Immigration to create works for their Reconciliation Action Plans and the West Coast Eagles for their Indigenous Round guernseys. Oh, and he’s written and illustrated two children’s books.
Magabala Books, Australia's oldest independent Indigenous publishing house and publisher of Kam’s books, said “[He is] garnering attention for his ability to reflect the natural world with intricate designs and striking line work.”
In 2018, Kam was named WA’s Young Person of the Year, and was awarded the Mission Australia Cultural Endeavours Award.
To him, seeking wisdom is “Knowing you don’t have all the answers.”
“Keep questioning,” he urges. “As soon as you shut yourself off, and think you know everything, you’re no longer receptive to new information.”
The world changes. Information changes. Change with it. Kamsani Bin Salleh
